The United States rugby team lost to Japan last night, but before I get into that, I have a more important matter to address.
Since I took a college freshman English class about 50 years ago and was introduced to the poem “To His Coy Mistress,” I have been saying it was written by Matthew Arnold, poet and son of Thomas Arnold, who was a master at Rugby School in the 1800s.
I repeated that in an earlier post to this blog.
Casper correctly points out in a comment to that post that the poem was written by Andrew Marvell.
While I am embarrassed by the mistake, the more astonishing thing to me is that I have carried around this error in my head for lo these 50 years. I should go back and repeat that English class.
